Dream

Set up your work space so that you are in a comfortable position. Your tools and rings are ready at hand and your light fixture is set up with the key ring cables.

You have the proper pliers for the piece you are working on — smaller rings call for smaller pliers. If you are selling this piece, use a tool dip to help protect from slippage. Glasses, loupes or a magnifying lamp will give you greater ease and control.

Start with rings that compose the main structure of your piece. Check your aspect ratio so you save time not having to redo work. Keep rings separated in containers — they tend to look the same size when you stare at them long enough.

Make sure you have your head in the game. Because of the nature of chainmaille — the pattern repeats giving you that hypnotic effect — at first you will see only a tangled mess of rings. Relax. A concentrated effort will keep you safe from slippage and have you in a near meditative state, freeing your thoughts to wander where they will.

Actions

01

Start with a couple of closed rings on your lobster clasp — the size you will be using.

02

Have your video instructions where you can see them. This will help greatly in the beginning as some weaves look like a mess until you get a few rows in.

03

Follow the video instructions as your guide. When you get comfortable with the weave, you can listen to music or watch something for enjoyment — come back when you are near the end to install the clasp and finish up.

Check

Always make sure you are in a comfortable position. Check your posture throughout the session.

Give your arms a break regularly — rest them on the table or armrests. If your armrests adjust, put them to the highest position to keep your project in front of you.

Always check your rings for closure. The better you close your rings the better your piece will look. Even if it looks good from one angle — check. This process makes ordinary extraordinary.

Tips

Begin slowly and concentrate on getting your rings tight and consistently closed.

Use different sizes of pliers to get your rings closed properly. It’s all about the grip without damaging the rings.

Look for the pattern in the weave. Because the pattern repeats, you can see it in a way that makes sense to you — and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Don’t get frustrated. Take breaks and give your hands a rest. Because you are rotating the pliers often, you reduce the hot spots that determine whether you get a blister or a callus. Remember — it only makes you stronger.
